The Smooth Fox Terrier started life as a stable dog,
its job being to hunt vermin. It probably descends
from terriers in the English counties of Cheshire and
Shropshire with some beagle blood added. Terriers
have hunted foxes, badgers, and vermin for centuries.
When foxhunting from horseback became popular
among the British gentry in the 1800s, a Fox Terrier
was carried in a saddle bag, ready to be released in
order to flush out the fox from its lair. The Industrial
Revolution only increased the breed's popularity-
in towns as ratters and in the country for foxhunts.
Fox Terriers are affectionate, trainable, and make
the ideal child's companion for rabbiting. The Smooth
needs daily grooming with a stiff brush, and trimming
ang chalking before a show.
