This small dog is a member of the spitz family, and
like other spitz, originated in the Arctic Circle. The
Pomeranian derives from white spitz that existed in
Pomerania, northern Germany, from about 1700.
They were much larger dogs and were bred down
after being imported into Britain about a hundred
years ago. Queen Victoria was much taken with the
breed, which helped to make it very popular.
The Pomeranian seems to have gained the
reputation of being an old lady's lapdog. While it is
certainly ideal for that role, adoring lots of attention,
it is also a lively, robust little dog that would walk
its owners off their feet if given the chance. This
affectionate and faithful dog is good with children
and makes a delightful pet. It is also a fine show dog
for those with plenty of time on their hands to care
for its double coat, which must be groomed with a
stiff brush every day and regularly trimmed. |
