The ancestors of the Manchester Terrier were
sporting terriers that would demolish rats in a pit for
the amusement of spectators in the mid-19th century.
This sport was popular among poorer people in areas
such as the city of Manchester in northern England.
The Manchester Terrier appears to descend from the
now extinct White English Terrier, with the addition
of Dachshund, Whippet, and King Charles Spaniel
blood. The Doberman and ltalian Greyhound
contributed to the Manchester's shiny coat and
coloring, and the latter to its slightly arched back.
The long-lived Manchester Terrier tends to be a
one-person animal. It also makes a good family pet,
and is suited to a town or country existence. The only
grooming required is a daily brush and rub-down. |
