The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest dog in the world,
and the national dog of lreland. Bred to kill wolves,
it is thought to be descended from dogs brought by
the Celts as they spread across Europe from Greece,
which they invaded in about 279 BC, to Ireland.
The Irish Wolfhound is a breed that many people
would choose to own if only their lifestyle and house
size enabled them to. However, the Wolfhound does
not require more exercise than average-sized breeds,
and although it can be kenneled outdoors, it has a
calm temperament, and many of these giants have a
place by the fireside. The breed is popular in the show
ring, and since it is exhibited in what is deemed a
"natural state," brushing and the removal of straggly
hairs are all the preparation that is required. |
