Like the Pharaoh Hound, the lbizan Hound is
descended from hunting dogs kept by the ancient
Egyptians. In the 9th century BC, Egypt was invaded
by the Romans, and the neighboring Carthaginians
and Phoenicians were driven out to the island of Ibiza.
The hounds they took with them remained on lbiza
for the next 3,000 years, still retaining the colors
depicted on Egyptian drawings of their ancestors.
The breed was also used for hunting in southern
Spain and France. The lbizan Hound comes in
three varieties: smooth-, coarse-, and long-haired.
This noble-looking animal has a kindly nature, is
good with children, rarely fights, and makes a fine
gundog or housepet. It is extremely sensitive and
has acute hearing, so must never be shouted at, but
responds well to kind treatment. Like all hounds, it
needs a lot of exercise. Its coat is easy to maintain,
needing only a daily brushing. |
