| The Greyhound is arguably the purest breed on Earth,
appearing to have changed little from dogs depicted
on the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs. It also has the
distinction of a mention in the Bible in the Book of
Solomon. It is likely that the Greyhound found its way
to Afghanistan, where its coat thickened to contend
with the colder climate, and was then brought to
Europe by the Celts. Possessing keen eyesight and
capable of great speed, this sighthound was highly
valued as a courser and, more recently, as a
competitor on the racing track.
The Greyhound does have a propensity to chase
anything that moves, but is also a gentle, faithful
animal that is good with children. It needs a daily
brushing and average but regular exercise on hard
ground, and takes up relatively little space, having
a liking for its own special corner. |
