The English Toy Terrier was bred from the
Manchester Terrier. This larger but otherwise similar
breed was developed from the now extinct rough-
haired Black and Tan Terrier and other breeds. The
Italian Greyhound and, possibly, the Whippet may
also have contributed to the English Toy Terrier.
The Manchester Terrier was bred to kill rats in a
pit for public entertainment, and its smaller relative
is an excellent ratter.
Surprisingly rare outside the show ring today, the
English Toy Terrier still retains the ability to hunt
vermin and makes an affectionate and intelligent
companion. It is good with children but tends to be
a one-person dog. The English Toy is easy to care for,
requiring little more than a daily brushing and a rubdown
to give its coat a sheen. It is a reasonably tough
little dog and does not have quite the same aversion to
rain as its more fastidious Italian Greyhound relatives |
