Some people consider this breed the picture of
ugliness, while others have only admiration for the
Bull Terrier, which is described somewhat poetically
in its standard as "the gladiator of the canine race."
The Bull Terrier began life as a fighting dog and was
the result of crossing an Old English Bulldog with a
terrier. The first Bull Terriers were said to have closely
resembled the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but then
Dalmatian and possibly other blood was introduced.
Despite its fierce appearance and strength, the Bull
Terrier makes a faithful and devoted pet. The bitch, in
particular, is utterly reliable with children. However,
this breed is too strong for other than the able bodied
to handle, and needs careful training. Its short, flat
coat is easy to look after. |
