The Bloodhound or Chien de Saint Hubert is one of
the oldest hound breeds. It is generally believed that
its earliest ancestors were dogs bred in Assyria around
2000-1000 BC. Taken to the Mediterranean region
by Phoenician traders, it then spread through Europe.
A concentration of hounds developed in Brittany in
the 7th and 8th centuries, from which emerged the
Saint Hubert. Able to follow a days-old scent, the
Bloodhound will not kill its quarry once found.
Good with children and exceedingly affectionate,
the Bloodhound makes an ideal companion for those
who have the room to accommodate it, the energy
to exercise it, and neighbors who do not object to
its baying. It can be kept in an average-sized home
provided that it has adequate exercise, but is best
suited to a rural environment. It should be groomed
daily with a hound glove. |
